Yoga Retreat India January 2024
In January 2024, I had the privilege of hosting my first yoga retreat in the serene backdrop of Kovalam, Kerala, India. To be honest, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness, stepping into this new endeavor. Welcoming a diverse group of participants – some new to yoga, while others experienced practitioners of over five years – presented a delightful challenge.
Yet, against all odds, the retreat unfolded perfectly, surpassing even my highest expectations. Nestled within the tranquil confines of the 'Amara Retreat,' an exquisite ayurvedic haven, every aspect was highly satisfying. From the most amazing food to the breathtaking views of the yoga shala, and the warm hospitality of the staff, every detail was meticulously curated.
As we immersed ourselves in the mesmerizing landscapes of Kerala, which is sometimes called 'God's own country,' our days started with sessions of yoga asanas, pranayama, and meditation. Complementing our practice, my partner, Scott White, a professional physiotherapist/yoga teacher, enlightened us with insightful lectures on pain science. Afternoons were reserved for calm sessions of yin yoga or yoga nidra, interspersed with immersive workshops on backbends, inversions, and hip openers.
Beyond the mat, we swam in beautiful warm Arabian sea, engaging in interesting conversations about yoga practice, life challenges, family matters, etc. We also challenged ourselves with daily cold water immersion. Initially my students were unfamiliar with this practice and were a bit reluctant to try it, however, their enthusiasm quickly grew as they discovered its transformative benefits. Daily ice baths have become their healthy habit. After a week in Kerala, we finished our retreat with a perfect last touch - excursion to the timeless marvels of the Taj Mahal and the historic Red Fort in Agra.
The closeness, positive energy, and the deep connections we made really left a mark on my heart. This retreat inspired me and got me excited for what's coming next. Looking back, I'm just grateful and eager for our next adventure together!
